What is collagen?

Collagen is the main protein of connective tissue in animals, including humans. It makes up about 25% of the total protein content. It connects and supports other bodily tissues, such as skin, bone, tendons, muscles, and cartilage. Therefore, it can be seen as a glue that holds the body together. Collagen works together with elastin to support the body’s tissues. The teamwork of collagen and elastin is essential in various of the body, including, but not limited to, the lungs, bones, and tendons. Even the blood vessels rely on both collagen and elastin. The lack of collagen would result in the disintegration of various parts of the body.

As we age, collagen degradation naturally occurs, but by ingesting collagen, the body is stimulated to produce more collagen. We have chosen to use marine collagen versus animal collagen since it is more easily absorbed and utilized by our bodies. The marine collagen we use in our Beauty Bowl is derived from deep sea fish. It is interesting to note that marine collagen has 3 times as many free amino acids (mg/100g) and almost 6 times as many Hyp and Pro (mg/100g) released when compared with animal collagen.
